Magazine Terminology

These are the Media terminology's associated with Magazines, that I will be using to analyse Magazine covers in the future.


Masthead - The name of the magazine which would be the main title of the magazine mainly at the top of the magazine because that is the part of the magazine you look at first.


Banner - To promote something exclusive for example new exclusive interviews or breaking news about a  band.


The Main Image - This is the image that catches the viewers eye it takes up most of the front cover this main image will have something inside the magazine such as a interview this is the main story in the magazine this is why they are on the front cover. This main image will help sell and promote the magazine.


Buzzword - Usually promotes something that is in the magazine that the reader can gain something out of the magazine such as it will usually have something to do with the reader "winning" a prize in the magazine.




Headline - The headline is the main piece of text on the front cover that promotes the main image.


Barcode - A code on the front cover which means that magazine is up for sale if it doesn't have a barcode it means it is free. The barcode tells you the price of the magazine.


Anchorage Text - The Anchorage text is found underneath the main headline helps the reader understand what the main image is about and also the main headline.




Puff - This is placed on the cover of magazine to make it stand out also a shape of some sort with text in it.


Secondary Image - Image on the front cover that do not really have anything to do with the main stories they are not as important than the main image.


Pug - When the corner of the page is covered and usually has a buzzword inside of it. it is an incentive to open the magazine.


Features - Something that you will find inside of the magazine.
