This is my finished Design for my Front cover for the magazine. I have re-done the background photograph, with a few experimental, however final, aesthetic touches.

Contents Page Mock-up.

This is my current mock-up for my Contents Page for my magazine. This is what I have got done in a hour of lesson, and will make further details, for completion at home. I experimented with various effects and brushes to create a sort of 'ethereal' and space-like mise-en-scene, which will suite the Dubstep style of music that my magazine is focused on.

Feminism.

The main image of Beth Ditto that this magazine is centred around, is fairly controversial in the public eye, featuring a woman that not only goes again the majority of women that are featured on magazine covers, but does so in a fashion that is central to the 'Male Gaze'. The red font and fluorescent yellow background is used to further accentuate the sexual nature that is being portrayed through the central image, with the quotation "Kiss my ass", proving to be quite intimidating, also portraying the idea that Beth Ditto has done this to prove a point, in a slightly derogative manner. The feminist Laura Mulvey, with her theory of the Male Gaze, would associate itself with the inference of this image, as the way Beth Ditto is represented in this image, is in the exact same manner that other females are. However, with the exception that her physique is not slender or like that of a model, of the type of woman that the Male Gaze accommodates.

Genre.

My genre of choice for my magazine will be somewhat centred around the layout/design used by Spin magazine in the image above, but with various modifications that I think will adhere to the target audience. I will focusing the on the 'Dubstep' genre of music, due to its relatively short existence, and it massively proficient popularity, especially with people within the target audience of 16-25, in which my magazine will be focused on. I will relate to the magazine above in the creation of my own, but with  a much more complex approach in terms of colour and art styles, with the assistance of my knowledge of photoshop.

Double Page Mock (Layout)

This is my initial layout that I will be using for my Double Page spread, based on the generic layouts used to most popular magazine spreads. It is likely that adjustments will be made, and also posted onto my blog in the near future.

Spin Magazine Front Cover Analysis.

I have chosen this magazine front cover, purely because of the popularity of this type of front cover being used throughout various magazines, Spin Magazine being a less notable one of the media.

The method of design with this specific magazine cover is fairly innovative, utilising the least amount of colour possible with the overall masthead and banners, whilst relying on the main image as the magazines main attraction. The fact that Florence has a very vibrant shade of hair colour, draws any looks towards the main image itself, helping identify what the particular magazine is centralised on, including the various bands being listed on the right hand side of the magazine. The way her hair style is, with a full fringe covering a large portion of her head, brings focus too her eyes, following a more personalised and concentrated look, for the readers viewing.

The Spin logo acts as a secondary, alluring feature,  it being the primary focus with identifying what magazine it actually is. The red logo colour is common throughout magazines, being utilised by other popular magazines such as 'NME'. Smaller features such as the buzzword in the top right corner, is printed in the same theme as the rest of the text of the magazine, black and white, again focusing on a plainer approach on the magazines less notable features, whilst retaining focus on the central image.

Contents Page Analysis - Q magazine

This Q magazine's contents page is dated back to 2010, but is still a great representative of typical music magazines, especially Q, that go for this simple and informative layout. The overall design of the contents page is fairly suited to Q magazine's in general, using typical colours such as red and white as the main foreground/background colour scheme. This not only prevents any possible confusion or limitations when reading the contents page, but also separates the readers focus into the three main categories; Features, masthead, and the main image.

The main image, is of course the main focus of the contents page, connoting a rivalry between lead singer from U2 'Bono', and lead singer from Muse 'Matt Bellamy'.  With there being little information on the contents page on who these two individuals actually are, this denotes that the supposed rivalry between the two, or the fact that they are extremely popular musicians, is well known throughout most mediums.

Contents Page Analysis - Kerrang Magazine.

This contents page is particularly chaotic in terms of the mise-en-scene, and the amount of jam packed information. The key image in the background is taken in a gig, showing the antics of crowd surfing, which connotes the overall theme of the magazine in particular. This image is also used to advertise the Kerrang/Relentless tour that was at the time, evident through the graphic in the bottom left corner of the main image. The overall design of the contents page is relative to the graphic design that is inherently used in most Kerrang magazines, that of black/white/yellow, and the striking 'KERRANG!' logo.

The features are listed in the bottom half of the page, with clustered images of the specific articles themselves, which suites the overall theme of the contents page, in concordance with the image from the gig, with people jam packed together.

Double Page Spread Analysis - Kerrang Magazine

This double page spread of Kerrang magazine, features the popular metal band Metallica, and is structured in a Q&A fashion, with the questions being asked from other iconic people in the metal scene currently.

The headline of "Less alcohol, less drugs and less dodgy women!" -  is quite attractive to the audience, in the way that it is the direct opposite of the standard representation of the rockstars lifestyle. This is an accurate realisation that Metallica and other bands have come to, after being in the industry for an extended period of time, that the lifestyle no longer applies once they have kids and are older etc.

The mise-en-scene of the double page spread, is styled in a punk theme, with a ripped in bio, explaining the   members of Metallica's current situation and what they do on a regular basis. The black/white/grey theme of the double page is standard for a article themed around a metal band, with most metal/rock themed articles in Kerrang magazine, sharing a similar design. The design also connotes what the title is inferring, that their lifestyle is a lot more simple and more centered around maintenance whilst upholding, the image that is Metallica. The image used on the right of the article, is the members of the band glaring at the reader, with an air of intimidation, and status, with Metallica being the "Biggest Metal Band In The World". With the shades, and long hair, the classic image of the metal musician is upheld, regardless of their age, giving way to the title, suggesting that their lifestyle is 'toned down', but they still play in front of audiences consisting of 100,000+ people.

Double Page Spread Analysis - Q Magazine

This magazine is stylised is a relatively natural way, in concordance with the Male Gaze, in terms of how men are generally represented in the media, and more specifically in music magazines. The two men in the magazine are purposely characterised in a fairly passive way, not being represented in anyway that could be presumed as provocative or 'homoerotic'. The overall style of the pages, in eterms of a colour scheme, and designed in the colours of Q magazine; Red, white and black. This simplicity is relative to the tone of the article, and the two individuals being interviewed.

The medium shot used to identify the members of 'Justice', has been used to fully describe what is going on, showcasing the various vinylls that they listen to, providing information on what music they like, for the fans appreciation. In concordance with the 'Justice's Musical Routemap, this shows the diversity of musical taste that Xavier and Gaspard share, from when they bought their first record, to the present day.

The overall layout of the two pages is fairly coherent, with the large picture taking up an entire page, seperating the literature from the image, in a simple juxtaposition. This is most likely to be relating to the mise-en-scene of the double page spread, being themed around consistancy.
